Velociraptor

We did our study of the velociraptor this week, and can I just say I had no idea that it is suspected that they had feathers?  They are hard to draw that way!  We started with some study of some basic facts about Velociraptors, and we looked into our dinosaur encyclopedia to find when and where they lived.

Then the girls used their water colors to pain a landscape that represented a place the velociraptor could have lived. Molly drew a nest because we learned that velociraptor's were more like birds, and probably lived in nests as well.  Nora painted a tree and a little lake with a fish. Emy painted a big pile of mud because she thinks that dinosaurs love mud.

Nora was having a bit of a rough day, so she was in and out of the school room and missed some of our pictures.  She was having calming down time in her room.

I found these great 3-d wooden puzzles of a couple of dinosaurs at Target for $3 so I grabbed a few.  They are pretty great, but I was surprised by how hard it is to get some of the pieces out of the wood, and then to put them together.  We ended up having to use super glue for some of the pieces, but we do love how our velociraptor turned out! We are loving our study of dinosaurs, there are so many fascinating things to learn!

Jesus Walking on the Water

Originally for gospel study I was printing coloring pages for them to color on, but I'm really loving just watching what they come up with.  It's so much more fun, and they get really into their drawings. Nora was upset about the black "narwhal" on her picture, because little sister Emy added that feature, and it was not appreciated.

Baby Time

I've mentioned before that this one is a very messy eater and so she usually gets a spray down in the sink in the morning which she absolutely loves. Then we get her dressed and have some reading time before school.  This morning she wasn't interested in sharing her chair...

Sophie Mouse

My girls LOVE the Sophie Mouse books, and to be honest so do I.  They are cute stories that build good character.  There is no questionable material in them, they are just good books! They are an early reader chapter book, so they have some illustrations, and the stories are fun and easy to follow.  Molly my 7 year old read them all last year. This year I read them aloud to Nora my 5 year old before bed, and she will probably read them on her own sometime next year.  She is still frustrated pretty easily by reading even though she can do it, so we keep things pretty short in that area for now.  If you haven't read the adventures of Sophie Mouse and you have little girls at home (or even little boys!) I highly recommend them!
